Windows 8.1 immediately logs out when unlocking a locked session

If I have locked the computer or put it in sleep mode, and someone else uses the computer with a different user, when I come back to unlock my session (the login screen says my user is logged in) it sometimes immediately terminates after I enter my password. The screen just goes black for a second before I'm returned to the login screen (I never even see the desktop). At this point my user is not shown as "logged in" and I can log in normally, but my session has of course been lost. The only clue I've found in the event log is "Desktop Window Manager has exited with code 0xd00002fe", but when I search for it on the web there is only remote desktop related information.
