Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade fails on user profile creation

0

I'm FINALLY upgrading my Windows 7 Ultimate machine to Windows 10 (several legacy applications that I use for my business have prevented me from upgrading until now). I tried and failed to upgrade my system four times last night. I'm at my wit's end and am hoping that some of you lovely folks can help me.

I performed all of the troubleshooting steps that I could find online. Here is a portion of the log from Microsoft's setupdiag utility ...

Matching Profile found: UserProfileCreationFailureDuringFinalize - C6677BA6-2E53-4A88-B528-336D15ED1A64

Recommend you check for unused user profiles and remove any unnecessary profiles found. Reboot and try the update again.

The Microsoft website says this about the failure ...

UserProfileCreationFailureDuringFinalize – C6677BA6-2E53-4A88-B528-336D15ED1A64
Matches a specific User Profile creation error during the finalize phase of setup. Will output the failure code.

Based upon this information, I deleted all unused user profiles, rebooted, and tried again. Same problem. Thinking that perhaps the Windows 10 installer was unable to update my current profile while I was logged into it, I created a temporary administrator account, logged into the new account, and tried again. Same problem.

By the way, this failure occurred before the first reboot of the upgrade process (I think I saw somewhere that the upgrade includes a total of four reboots).

I went looking for more diagnostic information. Here is another log that I found (I forget where) ...

2020-10-08 22:06:54, Error, MigPlatformStartupOnline caught exception: Win32Exception: User profile loading error. Aborting due to external request.: The specified user does not have a valid profile. And finally, the relevant entry in Event Viewer ...

The only thing I can think to do next is to create an entirely new user profile for myself and move everything from my old profile to my new profile, but I think that will probably lose a whole bunch of my settings. Do you have any other ideas to help me figure this out? Please send them along!
