Unable to mount root file system - nfs if the CONFIG_CGROUP is not enabled in Linux Kernel?

I am unable to mount a root file system, if I don't make the CONFIG_CGROUP=y in the kernel defconfig.

If I turn the CONFIG_CGROUP in the kernel to y, it crashes on executing the /sbin/init. I can see that it has mounted the root file system.

I want to understand the CGROUP, I am suspecting if I need to do some extra thing if I have enabled CGROUP in the kernel. What is it? I have read the document on CGROUP in kernel documents but I can't make out the significance here.
