windbg preview will not record a tdd session

When I tell windbg preview to start a recording session I get the error

TTD No trace files were identified from this record session  

The debugging session could not be started

FAILURE HR=0x8007007B

Failed to open the dump file 

and sometimes it tells me that a PATH is not set correctly but haven't been able to reproduce so I can't post the exact error. its a fresh install nothing has been changed. What can be done here?

I tried many programs through all give the same errors. This is on windows ten running from standard visual studio compiler. the debugger does still work in non tdd mode.
